A Brief History of Literature Ministry in Loma Linda

Literature Ministry Program

From January 14, 2016

By: Paul Damazo

1. January 14, 2016: Launched FMO literature 6-Packet small racks in 18 doctors’ waiting rooms (LLUC, Advent Hope, Relive, launched in 2015 and before).

2. February 15, 2016: Installed 5’ Literature Rack in FMO Lobby.

3. April 5, 2016: Started using IIW Lesson #1 and single enrollment card on FMO Literature Rack.

4. May 2016: Pastor Joelle arranged for Skype conference call with Pastor Mendez while on a cruise ship vacation. A number of Literature Ministry Committee members met with Pastor Joelle at Advent Hope for a conference meeting. Pastor Mendez volunteered to have a secretary at church office set up computer program to match a student enrollee with a teacher and to record follow-up with all incoming Bible study response cards from IIW. The “agreed to” procedure was to call, email or write people who sent in their IIW Bible study cards.

5. June 6, 2016: Paul called Melissa at IIW for counsel. She said ALL IIW church Bible schools in the U.S. don’t call, email, or write letters, to those who respond, and that, “The only successful method was to knock on doors unannounced”.

6. June 8, 2016: Paul and Karmy met with Pastor Mendez, Alma, Irene, and Simone to review why there were no responses to the “agreed to” procedure mentioned above regarding the IIW response cards.

> At this point Paul volunteered, because program was about to be stopped. He was willing to visit all who sent in response cards for a one-month test then report back to the LMC and Pastor Mendez and his group.

> Paul and Karmy invited Pastor Mendez and his group to a meeting at 2 PM June 14 at LLUC to meet with Melissa from IIW. Due to VBS no one from church could attend.

7. June 14, 2016: Paul, Karmy and Pat met at the LLUC with Melissa for two hours. The bottom line of the meeting was:

> DON’T call, email or write to those who send IIW response cards to LLUC.

> Go to the doors un-announced.

> Follow the guideline provided by Melissa regarding the “First Visit Procedure”.

8. June 18, 2016: Paul’s “One-month Test”

> Started on Sabbath, June 18, 25, and continued on July 2 and 9.

> Each Sabbath Karmy and one or two others joined Paul as trainees in case visitation system was to be used.

> Every contact from the beginning up to Sabbath, July 9, was visited on Sabbath afternoons.

9. RESULTS (July 9, 2016) of our joint “First Plan” which was decided by our Literature Ministry Committee and also approved by our Loma Linda University Church was ZERO!

10. RESULTS of unannounced “door-to-door” visits during the “One-Month Test” (June 18-July 9) as suggested by Melissa. We followed her “Two-Page Procedure”:

11. Total number of IIW response cards taken from the FMO rack and mailed & received (from inception (4/5/16) to present (7/11/16) is: SIXTEEN (16). This would extrapolate to SIXTY-FOUR (64) RESPONSES annually! This is compared to IIW church bible schools with 10 responses per 1,000 enrollment (1%) cards mailed to church zip codes.

Our SIXTY-FOUR (64) Bible Study Student total doesn’t include the people we met along the way who also want studies, such as those who request studies as we are filling up the racks, walking down the street to particular addresses and other means of making contact, such as the relatives, neighbors and friends of those we’re visiting, all because we were “using our legs to meet people where they are”.
